A summary of public reports, written by Ski in Sky and checked against each source. It is not an official investigation, and it may change as investigations continue.

What happened

A skier told resort staff that someone was lying on the course, and staff called police about 15:50. While skiing, the skier's neck had struck the boundary rope; they were unconscious when taken to hospital and died. An autopsy on 9 January found the cause of death was asphyxiation from compression of the neck, with no other external injury. The skier had come with friends but was skiing alone at the time. Kutchan police were investigating how the accident happened.

About 15:50 is when resort staff, told by a skier that someone was lying on the course, called police; not when the contact happened.
